My name is Anna English, and I have recently graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a major in English and two minors in Christian Studies and New Testament Greek. My goal is to work in the Christian publishing business as an editor, as well as write fiction that has Christian themes but that may not conform to the current trends in Christian fiction. I'm currently getting a Master of Divinity at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary in Michigan.
I have written a thesis paper where I analyze how certain Christian authors convey the theme of redemption in their writing, because I want to improve my own technique in that area and bring to light the flaws of the modern Christian fiction genre (for more of my thoughts on the subject, I touch on several aspects in my blog under the Christian Fiction tag). I am passionate about this subject and want to work in the Christian publishing business in order to learn how to make Christian fiction more effective in communicating the Gospel to nonbelievers.
In an effort to apply my thoughts on how to creatively express Christian themes in literature, I wrote Freeflight. It is still in the editing stage, but you can read a version of it here on my website. I periodically updated it as I wrote it, which was a fun way to get real-time feedback from readers who kept up with the story. I still revise the website version as I make major edits to the novel (mostly so I don't cringe every time someone tells me they've read it). Freeflight is certainly not the epitome of a "Christian" novel, but I tried not to fall into the ruts that I have observed in many published Christian fiction books.
I also love studying Greek, something I learned as I minored in it, so I'm hoping I can utilize that beyond personal benefit. I like taking a scholarly approach to Scripture, but I know that my true passion lies at the intersection of literature and faith. I'm not yet sure how I can best use my skills and knowledge in the publishing industry, but I'm open to the possibilities!
